The LifeFlight
program, which began in 1982, UMass Memorial emergency personnel have
cared for more than 23,500 patients across a 130-mile coverage area that
stretches from southern Connecticut to New Hampshire and from Boston to
Albany, NY. In addition to victims of accidents, the helicopter
transports patients requiring urgent tertiary care, such as emergency
cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery available at UMass Memorial.
The program has
more than 2,500 pre-identified landing zones, including small airfields, community hospital grounds, ball fields and
highways to allow for the quickest possible access for patients in need. LifeFlight regularly transports patients from UMass Memorial member and
affiliate hospitals, such as Wing Memorial in Palmer, Clinton Hospital
and HealthAlliance in Leominster.
