The following are general
considerations to be taken into account when considering helicopter
transportation for a patient.
In order to ensure appropriate use of the helicopter, guidelines
have been established for all emergency care personnel who are in a
position to request our services. There are three major
considerations when deciding to request a response from Life Flight.
-
Would the
amount of time needed to transport the patient by ground to an
appropriate facility pose a threat to the patient's survival and
recovery?
-
Would weather
and road conditions or other factors affecting ground transport
seriously delay the patient's access to advanced life support?
-
Does the
available ambulance unit have clinical skills and equipment
needed to care for the patient during transport?
For more comprehensive
helicopter transport guidelines, reference Appendix J of the
Massachusetts Statewide Treatment Protocols
or call the communications center at (508) 856-3558.
If guidance is
needed during an incident, on scene personnel should contact medical
control. |
